Southwest Airlines Coming to MTJ

JetBlue also to Start Service

MONTROSE, Colorado (October 8, 2020) – In a year that can only be described as a rollercoaster in the air industry, Montrose Regional Airport’s winter flight schedule is starting to take shape.

As the airlines are looking for paths to recovery through the pandemic, leisure travel has taken the lead in an industry historically dependent on business travel. New players and new routes will take the place of some historic service, and flight options will have a different look.

With the suspension of Delta and Allegiant flights for the coming winter, Southwest Airlines and JetBlue Airways will replace them at MTJ.

“We are glad to welcome Southwest as partners to western Colorado, Telluride and the Montrose Airport,” said Matt Skinner, CEO of Colorado Flights. “The new flights provide great connectivity to our longstanding markets for both incoming guests and area residents and businesses, and another layer of economic sustainability for our region.”

"Adding Southwest Airlines to Montrose Regional Airport is a win for the community and region," said Montrose Regional Airport Director Lloyd Arnold. "Southwest's commitment to quality, customer-first approach, and the large number of major cities available via their service is attractive for the regional market and beyond."

Service for both airlines is scheduled to start mid-December. Southwest will fly 2-3x daily from Denver (DEN) to MTJ, and on Saturdays and Sundays from Dallas Love Field (DAL) to MTJ through the winter. JetBlue will operate from Boston Logan Airport (BOS) to MTJ on Saturdays and select Wednesdays during the season.

American will also be returning with a new/old route this winter with flights on Saturdays from Charlotte (CLT), the airline’s second largest hub. American will continue to fly twice-daily from Dallas- Fort Worth to MTJ, daily from Phoenix, weekly from New York-LGA, and daily during busier weeks from Chicago.

United’s routes will see some shifts, with Denver likely to run 3-4x daily to MTJ, Newark (EWR)-MTJ reducing from daily to 2-5x weekly, Houston and Chicago running daily except for potential weekends-only in January, San Francisco maintaining schedule except for fewer weekday flights during January, and Los Angeles running as normal on weekends.

Denver Air will run a similar schedule from DEN - Telluride Airport (TEX), including twice-daily during the busier weeks of the season, connecting and bookable through United or at Denver Air.

Even as the schedule is announced, it is with the caveat that each of these airlines will continue to adjust service on a month-to-month basis as the pandemic and recovery continue.

MTJ & TEX now feature 15 nonstop flights from 11 major hubs, including nine daily flights from six major hubs.

Airlines and airports continue to improve safety and health protocols as travelers return to the air. Seat restrictions and spacing are handled individually by each airline. Guests are advised to check safety protocols for both the airline on which they will be traveling and the destination they are traveling to.
